Publishers

One big magazine publisher is Condé Nast, it was founded in 1909. It has many popular magazines such as Vogue, GQ, Glamour and Vanity Fair. Whereas, it also has other magazines that are not so famous, such as Brides, The World Of Interiors and House & Garden. These types of magazines reach out to a different audience compared to the first ones listed. Perhaps a more mature audience because people are more likely to get married in their 30s and buy their own house as they will be more likely to afford it at that point in their life.

Here are some examples of covers from Condé Nast. Most of them are quite similar. One thing I have noticed that they all have in common is that the masthead is directly at the top of the page. This is effective placement of the masthead because your attention is drawn straight to it and the way that the magazines are positioned in the shop will mean you will be able to see part of the masthead/ name of the magazine and easily identify it from this, so the colour of them is also bright in order to convince you to pick up that magazine.
Furthermore, on the covers involving models, the majority are positioned with their head and face directed to the camera. Which is effective as it attracts your attention and makes you feel included with the use of direct eye contact. I think that the GQ one where the model is looking away is not as effective, because there is less of a connection between the image and the reader.
Also, the layout is similar on most of them. For example there are coverlines all at the sides and then at the bottom left/ middle there is a main coverline which includes the name of the celebrity. This is more likely to draw in an audience if it is the name of a celebrity they are a fan of. I like the use of alliteration on the Adele Vogue cover, as it makes it more interesting.

Another large magazine publishing company is Hearst. It does not just publish magazines but also holds a diverse range of media, such as broadcasting, real estate and newspapers.
